After faithfully fulfilling these responsibilities, the perpetuation of apostolic activity was no longer needed or provided for within the church. Other Protestants apply the term apostle to an additional class of individuals, namely, the great missionaries who were first to take the gospel to foreign lands. For example, William Carey and Hudson Taylor have been referred to as apostles in this more restricted sense of the word. And individuals today who plant churches are also sometimes thought of as apostles.

Some NAR leaders who are influential in broader evangelicalism include Mike Bickle (IHOP), Lou Engle (The Call), and Bill Johnson (Bethel Church in Redding, California). Bickle’s influence is growing to such an extent that conferences sponsored or co-sponsored by IHOP have featured well-known evangelicals, including the late philosopher Dallas Willard,85 apologist Josh McDowell,86 and Bible teacher Francis Chan. 87 Of course, simply because Willard, McDowell, Chan, or the members of Third Day accepted an invitation to appear at a conference does not mean that they share in the outlook of these NAR leaders.
