Just before her earliest successful publishing ventures, Freeman's life was touched by a series of personal tragedies that, coming as close together as they did, must have affected her deeply. In 1876 her only sister, Anna, died at the age of seventeen of "disease of the mesenteric" (Foster, 40). The following year the Wilkins family moved once again for financial reasons, this time into the home of a prominent Brattleboro family, that of the Reverend Thomas Tyler, where Mrs. Wilkins was to serve as housekeeper.

A young woman of twenty-five, Mary Wilkins no doubt found this move particularly humiliating, made all the more so by the fact that she apparently had a crush on Hanson Tyler, one of the three sons of the Reverend Thomas Tyler's first marriage. During the time the Wilkins family occupied the Tyler Page 12 home, Hanson Tyler was serving as a naval ensign and returned only infrequently to the Brattleboro home when on leave. Only a few years later, Mrs. Wilkins, a strong and vigorous woman, died suddenly at the age of fifty-three.

A few months after she died, John Macy, in an article for The Bookman entitled "The Passing of the Yankee," used Freeman's descent into obscurity as a metaphor signaling the end of decades of prominence for New England in general: "In the year when Boston was celebrating three hundred glorious years Mary Wilkins Freeman died. Newspapers and literary journals outside Boston noticed her death but made little of it. All her important work was done thirty years ago; her body had outlived her power and her reputation, and she had passed into literary history as a writer of village tales once admired but no longer read" (617).
